A Big Ending to the Choir Season

Yesterday was the end of the choir season, and all of the choirs participated in the service. Thank you to all of the choir members and their directors:
  • Chancel Choir - Ginger Minneman, Director
  • Sonshine Choir - Elizabeth Beal, Director (thanks to her husband Joe for substituting for Elizabeth, who was unable to attend yesterday)
  • Joyful Noise Choir - Celeste Hoerner, Director
  • Bell Choir - Richard Freudenberger, Director

Thanks also go to Sonia Davila for accompanying the Sonshine Choir and to Phil Hanna for singing a solo with them.

As always, we appreciate the talents of our organist, Rachel Spry.

Our music team is lead by Ginger Minneman as Music Director. Ginger's talent, creativity, cheerfulness and enthusiasm make her a joy to work with, and inspire us to keep pushing ourselves to grow as church musicians.

The choirs will resume in September. In the meantime, we look forward to hearing soloists and small groups singing and playing through the summer.

A Message From Our Pastor

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This Sunday at the 8:15 a.m. worship, the Sonshine Choir will present special music. Since the Sonshine Choir usually sings at the 10:30 a.m. service, this will be a real treat for this worship service, and we thank Elizabeth Beal (director), Sonia Davila (accompanist), and the members of the children's choir for making this special musical presentation.

Rebuilding Together will be held this Saturday, April 28. The "Lutheran House" is located just west of the V. A. Hospital complex, off Rt. 35. (Call for directions.) Work begins at 8:00 a.m., and lunch is served between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with working continuing into the afternoon. If you can share any time at all, your help will be greatly appreciated, as we join with other Lutheran congregations in the Dayton Conference to help a Dayton resident rehab her home.

The Youth are holding their annual MOTHERS' DAY BRUNCH on Sunday, May 6 (the week before Mothers' Day). Proceeds will go to the Youth mission work. Mark your calendars, and plan to attend!

CEREAL SATURDAY/SUNDAY
The Social Ministry Committee is asking that everyone bring breakfast cereal when you come to worship May 5/6 to stock the shelves of the New Hope Food Pantry. Add a box to the grocery cart in the narthex. Any kind you'd like to share will be welcome. Hot cereals like oatmeal or grits; cold cereals – flakes, puffs or whatever shapes you like. Any and all kinds will help feed those who are hungry.

May God bless you this week, and may we worship together this weekend.

In Christ,
Gary

How to Make a Comment

One of our members who recently visited this blog asked me how to leave comments on the blog. It's really pretty simple, once you know how to do it:
  1. At the end of each posting, there is a line that indicates who posted the posting. In the same line, there is a link that says "comments," which identifies how many comments have have been left. Click on the word "comments," and a box appears with instructions.
  2. Type your comment in the space provided.
  3. Below the space where you typed your comment, you will see a set of letters that look like they've been stretched. Type these letters into the "Word Verification" box that appears below them. This is a feature designed to stop spammers from having computers automatically leave comments on a blog.
  4. Choose an identity. If you have a Google or Blogger account, you can choose the first choice and identify yourself this way. Otherwise, choose "Other" or "Anonymous."
  5. Finally, click on "Publish Your Comment." (You can preview the comment before this if you want to and make changes.)

Once comments have been left on the blog, anybody can read them by clicking the "comments" link at the end of the posting. When there are multiple comments to a posting, they appear in the order they were made. Whenever a comment is posted, the Worship Committee is notified by email so that the comments can be monitored for potential problems, such as spam being posted.

This same procedure will work at the Sonshine Choir's blog. www.sonshinechoir.blogspot.com Wouldn't it be nice for the Choir's director to be able to tell the kids that positive comments were posted on the blog about what they've been doing?

Worship this Weekend

The Sonshine Children's Choir will be helping lead worship during the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, February 11. They will sing "I'd Like to Ride a Camel." Their director, Elizabeth Beal, has also been working with them on "Glory to God," and the refrain for the hymn of the day, "Blessed Are They."

There will be free blood pressure screenings after the Saturday evening service and after both Sunday services. These screenings are hosted by the Health Ministry Team.

The Youth Group will sponsor a Valentine's Brunch after the 10:30 worship service on Sunday. Suggested donation is $4.00 for children and $7.00 for adults. All proceeds will go to support the Youth Group's mission work.

A Message From Our Pastor

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

The first Sunday snow of the winter last weekend proved to be a challenge for some, and a breeze for others. Nine of us braved the elements for 8:15 a.m. worship, as we gathered in the chancel for a “spoken” service. But by 10:30 a.m., nearly 100 of us were “rollicking” for God with the members of the Sonshine and Joyful Noise Children’s Choirs! Special thanks to the children, their parents, and the choir directors Elizabeth Beal and Celeste Hoerner for refusing to allow a little snow to keep us from worshiping God!!

This weekend, snow or no snow, our lessons remind us that God’s love calls and gathers us together in the Lord’s mission. During the 10:30 a.m. worship, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism for two new disciples of Christ.

And, as of Saturday, January 27 the 2006 Annual Report Booklets are available to be picked up in the narthex (one per household, please). I invite you to read through the reports in preparation for our annual congregation meeting . . . which is Sunday, February 4, 11:45 a.m. (the Annual Congregation Meeting, that is). Mark your calendars, plan which food dish you plan to bring to share (fried chicken, drinks and place settings provided), and keep our community of faith in your prayers as we strive to discern God’s will for our congregation this year and in the years to come. On that day, we will also join forces with others throughout the United States, as we participate in the Annual Souper Bowl – please bring at least one can of hearty soup to the annual meeting to combat hunger. Our donations will be given to the New Hope Food Pantry.

LOOKING AHEAD . . . .
We still need volunteers to serve as Lenten Soup Chefs – help prepare one or more soup meals for our Wednesday mid-week Lenten services. Use the bulletin insert this weekend to sign up, or contact the church office.

“Go Red” Healthy Heart Women’s Valentines Tea – Saturday, February 10, 3:00 p.m. A representative from the American Heart Association will be the guest speaker. Door prizes will be awarded. This event is free, open to the public, and is sponsored by our Health Ministries Team. Please RSVP to Rachel Spry (ras@oursaviordayton.org) by February 6.

Valentines Brunch – Sunday, February 11, 11:30 a.m., in the church fellowship hall. Sponsored by the Youth Group, this event is a fundraiser to support this year’s Youth Mission Event. Plan to stop by for great food and fellowship!

Let’s gather together this weekend in worship to celebrate the wonders of our God!
In Christ,

Gary

Sonshine Choir

The Sonshine Choir sang at the 10:30 AM service this last Sunday. Their director, Elizabeth Beal, has been teaching the children about liturgy and what it means to be a worship leader. The choir sang an acclamation before the second lesson and a response after it was read: "Rejoice in the Lord Always." They also sang as a group during the "Lamb of God" and a harmonization during the last hymn. Thanks to Elizabeth for her efforts and to the children for participating. I believe that this is one of the important things we have going on right now - it'll be a joy to watch this group of children learn more about worship and leadership in the church as they grow older. Please encourage and support them in every way that you can. To learn more and/or leave a comment, you can visit the Sonshine Choir blogsite by clicking here or by clicking the link on the right side of this page.
