Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

If Missouri's state motto is "the Show Me state", perhaps we should begin thinking of our faith in God as "show me" – because it's not just enough to talk about believing in God. The Book of James says it best – "faith without works is dead". We are called to put our faith to work in the world, to make a difference in the lives of others, not just talk about it, or sing some hymns in church. So, this weekend, when in our Gospel lesson we hear Philip wanting to show the messiah to his buddy Nathaniel, we have to look way beyond thinking about just inviting people to church. There are so many other connections we can make with people in showing them the messiah, ways that minister to their needs, ways that change their lives, ways that answer Jesus' call to feed and clothe and house and lift up people . . . ways that intimately and tangibly show them the God we worship, the One who truly cares about them. That's what Lutheran Church of Our Savior is called to be about in the Miami Valley and beyond. It is why God invites us, calls us, challenges us to share with others the blessings we have from God. Join me this weekend as we come together in worship to prayerfully, humbly, joyfully commit ourselves and our financial gifts to God in ministry in 2012. Our "Consecration Weekend" is not just about submitting our "estimate of giving" forms . . . it is about how we want to work together to let others see and experience the God we worship!

Consecration Weekend

In worship this weekend we will receive our "Estimate of Giving" forms and ask God's blessing on our gifts. Extra forms will be on hand if you forget yours; and envelopes will be in the pews for you to insert your completed forms.

Holy Terrors Planning Lunch

This Sunday, January 15, families will gather in the Parish House meeting room at noon to plan activities and service projects for the year. Pizza, veggies, and drinks will be provided. Parents and children age 2 – grade 6 are invited and encouraged to attend.

Comparative Religions Class

Rabbi David Sofian, the senior rabbi at Temple Israel in Dayton, will be with us next Tuesday, January 17 for our monthly Comparative Religions class. This month we meet at Lutheran Church of Our Savior; light dinner is served at 6:00 p.m., and class presentation/discussion begins at 6:45 p.m. All are welcome.

5^TH Sunday Worship/Congregation Meeting

January 29 is the 5^th Sunday of the month, meaning that we will hold only ONE worship service that weekend, at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Children's Choir rehearsals and Sunday School will meet as scheduled. Following worship, we will gather in the fellowship hall for our annual meeting to review 2011 ministries and act upon the 2012 budget proposal. You are asked to bring a food dish to share. Meat and drinks will be provided. During the meeting, Rachel Lammi will work with the children in making candles.

Marriage Enrichment Workshops

The Rev. Steven Ingram (Miami Valley Hospital Pastoral Counseling Center) will lead a 4-session Marriage Enrichment Workshop at LCOS for up to 8 couples. The workshop dates are February 19, March 4, March 18, and April 1, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. (coincides with Confirmation Class times). Cost per couple is $40.00 for all 4 sessions. Light refreshments will be available. If you have questions, or wish to sign up, please contact Rachel Lammi (rachel@oursaviordayton.org).

Reading The Gospel According to Mark

Like previous years, we are being challenged by our Christian Education Committee to read a book of the Bible during the season after the Epiphany. This year, it is The Gospel According to Mark. It is the shortest of the 4 gospels, and the first written after Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension. This year, for each chapter you read (there are only 16!), pick up a paper YELLOW LION in the narthex or by the chapel, and write your name and the chapter number on it. The lions will be posted throughout the chapel and sanctuary. Then, on Sunday, March 4, we will hold our annual Bible Bowl, in which we will try to answer questions pertaining to our reading in a friendly, competitive celebration. So, start reading. If you are away during Epiphany, keep reading and email me. I will share your name and chapter numbers with Rachel Lammi, so that you can continue to participate.

Souper Bowl

Once again, LCOS will participate in the national "Souper Bowl", held on Sunday, February 5, the same day as the NFL's Super Bowl. Souper Bowl is a national movement in churches to fight hunger by having members bring food donations to worship on the same day that our nation spends millions of dollars on entertainment. We will have two containers, one for each team in the game; place your food donations in your favorite team's container, and we'll see if the outcome of our donations mirrors the game. All food/$ donations for the Souper Bowl stay in the Miami Valley to feed the hungry.

Reading Mark

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The season of Epiphany has begun, and like previous years, we are being challenged by our Christian Education Committee to read a book of the Bible. This Epiphany season, we are challenged to read THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK. It is the shortest of the 4, and the first written after Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension.

This year, for each chapter you read (there are only 16!), pick up a paper YELLOW LION in the narthex or by the chapel, and write your name and the chapter number on it. The lions will be posted throughout the chapel and sanctuary.

Then, on Sunday, March 4, we will hold our annual Bible Bowl, in which we will try to answer questions pertaining to our reading in a friendly, competitive celebration.

Weekly Ministry News

Dear People of God,

I was a junior at Hanover College on April 3, 1974, when 3 tornados ripped through the college campus, the same day Xenia, Ohio was flattened. One of the college structures toppled by the high winds was the 100,000 gallon water tower. Let loose, that amount of water was powerful enough to wipe out much of what was left standing in its path; instead, it is believed that all 100,000 gallons were sucked up into the tornado, perhaps to be dispersed by the storm somewhere else. Water has amazingly destructive and wonderfully life-giving power. Coupled with God's Word, it changes the world! This weekend, we celebrate The Baptism of Our Lord, marking the beginning of Jesus' ministry, when God's love was unleashed upon the world. It is a time for us to ponder our own "spirit-filled" encounter with water and God's Word, and to ask what we have done since being spirit-filled and unleashed upon the world. So, what have we done?

Epiphany Dinner/Worship/Clean-out

This Friday, January 6, is the final day of the Christmas Season. It is Epiphany Day, marking the time when God was revealed to the non-Jewish world, initially through the visit of the Magi to the toddler Jesus and his parents. On this Epiphany night, we will gather at 6:00 p.m. for a simple meal in the Parish House Blue Room, and then move to the sanctuary for a brief Epiphany service. Afterwards, we will "reclaim the sanctuary" by dismantling the Chrismon trees. All ages are welcome to come and help!

Football Challenge Tailgating Celebration
The first annual Football Challenge has concluded and we raised $3544 for local ministries – just by watching high school, college and pro football games! To celebrate, we will hold a "tailgating" party on Sunday, January 8, 11:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Representatives of the various ministry organizations will be on hand to receive the money we raised for them. You are invited to bring your favorite tailgating food to share, as well as your own soft drinks (this is a correction from last week's email). In the spirit of American tailgating, the congregation council has voted to permit adults to bring beer and wine to this event. Coffee and punch will be provided.

Altar Flowers

We are still seeking donors for worship Altar Flowers in 2012. Altar flowers are $30/vase. Sign up this weekend, or call the church office. For those who already signed up for flowers – Thank You!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

And, so it begins all over again! God has led us through the doorway from one church year to another, and this weekend we mark that new beginning in worship as The First Sunday in Advent. Historically, Advent has very little to do with Christmas; it is a season designed to help us remember our mortality and God's promise of coming to make all things right in the world. Remembering our mortality is a very apt way to begin a new church year, for it helps to set the tone for the year: God is God, and we are God's people, but we aren't God (it's good to be reminded of that from time to time!). The liturgical color of this first season is BLUE, a symbol of hope, both for now and the age to come. The wreath with four candles is a visual aid to help us mark the time in this four week season. Our worship lessons for this weekend call us to stay alert and watch – watch for the daily and final coming of Christ, all the while remaining alert to the needs of those around us.

ADVENTURE AWAITING

Join us this Sunday for our annual "Adventure Awaiting" celebration! Food, music, holiday craft activities, and our Silent Auction. The auction is a major fundraiser for our year-long Adopt-A-Family program. This year, we have adopted 19 families. Come and enjoy the start of a new year!

THEOLOGY ON TAP

Our public faith discussion at Chappy's Tap Room and Grille will be held on Monday, November 28, 6:30 p.m. This month, our discussion topic is the theology of St. Paul's "for the common good" and partisan politics.

CALLING ALL LUMBERJACKS

"I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK . . ." With apologies to Monty Python, we are out of firewood, and we will be harvesting some of the dead trees on the north hillside on Saturday, December 3. Arrive at 8:30 a.m. (or whenever you can), and bring chainsaws, woodsplitters, gloves, goggles. If you don't want to cut wood, we can still use people to haul wood. And, if you burn wood at home, you are welcome to take some home.

HOLY TERRORS CHRISTMAS PARTY

ST. OLAF CHOIR SIMULCAST

The St. Olaf University Choir Christmas Fest simulcast is playing at the Hollywood 20 Cinemas at the Fairfield Commons on Sunday, December 4, at 3:00 p.m. Our own Kira Fenstermacher is a member of the choir. This event features 5 choirs and the St. Olaf Orchestra.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS

It's time! Order forms for Christmas Eve poinsettias can be picked up in the narthex, cloister hallway, and by the chapel. Cost is still $7/plant. This year we have ordered the marbled variety (red and white). Deadline is Monday December 12 for your completed form and $7 to be in the church office.

Weekly News - Festival of All Saints

Dear People of God,

This weekend, we have two different themes to our worship. On Saturday night, and the two Sunday morning services, our focus will be on the need to pay attention to staying connected with God, as we hear Jesus' parable of the 5 wise and 5 foolish maidens. Every one of us needs to have our spiritual tanks refilled from time to time, because they do run dry. A healthy relationship with God is the only way to replenish our wearied souls.

And then, at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, we will hold our annual Service of Hope and Remembrance, as we gather to celebrate the Festival of All Saints, remembering loved ones who died, and praising God for their presence in our lives. Following the service, everyone is invited to the fellowship hall for dinner and sharing of memories of those who have died. I hope you will be able to join us for this important annual event for the congregation and community.

THANKSGIVING FOOD COLLECTION

It is time to collect Thanksgiving meal items for the New Hope Food Pantry. Pick up your grocery bag at church this weekend, and return it to the church on November 5/6 with the following items:

            + 2 pkgs/boxes mashed potatoes

            + 1 can sweet potatoes

            + 1 box cornbread mix

            + 1 can green beans

            + 1 pkg noodles

            + 1 can/pkg gravy

VETERANS' RECOGNITION

Veterans' Day is Friday, November 11, and we are inviting the community to join us for a special service on Sunday, November 13, at 10:30 a.m. The morning will be dedicated, in part, to honoring service people of all branches of the military. Our Fellowship/Evangelsim Team, which is sponsoring this event, invites everyone to bring items for a care package to be sent to those who are currently serving. Items for the care package include: Chapstick, small tubes of sunscreen, baby wipes, nail clippers, word or number puzzles, decks of cards, envelopes, paper, pens, stamps, bandannas, small footballs, small travel sized board games, packages of USDA beef jerky, and hard candy. Coffee will be available prior to 10:30AM and a reception will follow the service.

Service men, women and their families give so much and we believe it important to show our appreciation and gratitude. We are inviting veterans, and the families and friends of those who are currently serving, to join us for the morning

CARE OF CREATION

On Sunday, November 13, 4:00 p.m., we will host a special "care of creation" program for the community. Mr. Peter Rushton, of Confirmation Camp fame, will be with us, bringing his "family" of reptiles, including snakes. His program is designed to help us learn to care for those parts of God's creation we usually don't like. Invite your friends!

SOUP MAKERS NEEDED

It is our turn to host the annual Thanksgiving Eve service with St. Paul Lutheran (Wayne Ave.) on Wednesday, November 23. Prior to the 7:00 p.m. service, we will have a soup dinner, and we invite any and all soup makers to share a pot of homemade soup with us. Please respond to this email if you wish to make soup.

2012 FLOWER/CANDLE CALENDARS

It is time to begin signing up to place flowers on the altar during worship next year, as well as underwriting the eternal candle each month. Both "sign up" calendars are in the narthex. Cost of a vase of altar flowers is $30; cost for the eternal candle each month is $15. Sign up this weekend.

All Saints Sunday - Service of Remembrance

Dear People of God,

In observance of the Festival of All Saints, the Chancel Choir of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior will present Home, A Service of Hope and Remembrance on Sunday, November 6 at 4:00 pm. The service will incorporate music and inspiring readings, as well as a time to remember family members and friends who have died over the years. This year, we will also remember the 13 LCOS members who died since last year's All Saint's service. This year's music will include classics such as Selig sind die Toten by Heinrich Schütz, the Virgil Thomson arrangement of the beloved southern hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, along with some wonderful contemporary pieces by composers such as Gyneth Walker and Stephen Paulus. At this time of year when nature reminds us of the eventuality of death, we hope that this service will serve as a reminder of the hope that is ours in Christ. We invite you to join us for this special event. Immediately following the service, dinner will be served in the fellowship hall, during which time we will share memories of those who are no longer living. We hope you can join us.

Church News - A Message From Our Pastor

Dear People of God,

In our first worship lesson this weekend from the Acts of the Apostles, Luke describes the disciples looking up, watching Jesus ascend into heaven. After a time, two heavenly messengers appear and ask why they are just standing there, gazing up in the sky – the implication being that they need to go home and be about the work that Jesus trained them to carry out, leaving Jesus to worry about when he is going to return. And yet, throughout the history of Christianity, the Church has forgotten that angelic admonition, obsessing over the end times, even if it is just our own, worrying about where we will end up instead of focusing on what Jesus has trained us to carry out – in the here and now. This Sunday, 5 of our young ladies will affirm their baptismal faith in a service of confirmation (during the 9:45 a.m. service). They will be vowing to use their faith in their daily lives to serve God, to strive to make a positive difference in this world, in the here and now. I invite you, I encourage you, I implore you, to support them in this new chapter in their faith journeys – help them to remain focused on the here and now. Let Jesus take care of what happens at the end time.

Volunteers Needed for Kingdom Kids Children's Church

This summer, instead of holding Summer Sunday School classes concurrent with worship, the Christian Education Team is extending Children's Church through the summer. Volunteers are needed to help lead the children in this special worship/learning time, which is held during the 9:45 a.m. worship (after the Children's Moment through the offering time). Vacation Bible School Supplies Needed

For the games at VBS this month (June 20-24), we need 40 plastic half-gallon milk/juice containers. Please start saving your containers and bring them to the church. PLEASE RINSE OUT THE CONTAINERS BEFORE BRINGING THEM TO CHURCH!!! Thank you.

Lutheran Disaster Relief

As tornadoes and other natural disasters continue to disrupt/destroy lives and property around our nation, Lutheran Disaster Relief is helping. You can help by making a monetary donation to LCOS, designating it for LDR; you can also designate your gift for domestic assistance if you want it to remain in this country. If you are interested in volunteering to help clean up in Joplin, please respond to this email. A group is forming from our church, and will be joined by Lutherans from area congregations. LDR will contact us when they are ready for volunteers to begin working in Joplin, and then we will start planning details.

Youth Sale

No, we're not selling youth . . . instead, our youth are participating in the Oakwood Rotary Garage Sale, hosted by LCOS this Saturday, June 4. The youth will be selling food items, and a variety of craft items, with the proceeds going to our Confirmation Camp ministry. If you have any craft/food items you would like to donate to the cause (you don't have to staff the sale table), please bring all items to the small conference room next to the church office. And, of course, you are welcome to wander through the sales tables to find that special treasure.

Mac and Cheese Weekend

The Social Ministry Committee invites all of us to bring to the church food donations of Macaroni and Cheese for the food pantry this weekend.

THE CHURCH AND THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT: WORKING FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

On Sunday, June 12, 3:00 – 5:30 p.m., LCOS will host a special event for the Dayton Conference and the Dayton community, featuring a presentation by Skip Cornett, Director of Continuing Education and Life-Long Learning at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Skip is the Ohio-Indiana coordinator for "Churches for Middle East Peace", and the chair of the Southern Ohio Synod Middle East Task Force. Sponsored by three Lutheran congregations (North Riverdale, St. Paul, Wayne Ave., and LCOS), this event is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of the on-going Israeli-Palestinians conflict, as well as the current issues and various lobby groups that offer resolution to this conflict (or keep it alive). We offer worship on all four days in the hopes that as you participate in worship – in the prayers, and singing, and Sacrament of Holy Communion, and in the retelling of these sacred stories – your lives may be changed forever as well. As you read over the schedule below, plan to join us!

            Maundy Thursday (6:30 p.m., @ Our Savior)

            We celebrate God's gift of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, along with offering prayers and

            anointing for healing.

Good Friday (6:30 p.m., @ St. Paul's, Wayne Ave.)

We hear the story of Jesus' Passion – arrest, trial, torture, crucifixion and burial – as recorded in Scripture, through the "Stations of the Cross".

            Holy Saturday (5:30 p.m., @ Our Savior)

            We gather in the chapel for prayer (sung, spoken and silent), asking God to send peace and

            healing to the world. We will also celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Celebration of the Resurrection! (8:15 and 10:30 a.m., @ Our Savior)

Let our "alleluias" lift to the skies as we praise God for new life! This day is why our lives have meaning; it is the source of all hope and new life in the world. Kid's Church will take a break this day so that our families can be together.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week

Dear People of God,

   This weekend the church marks the start of the holiest week in the church year with the commemoration of "Palm Sunday". And as much as history has tried to romanticize Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, Scripture reveals that it was a calculated, well-planned public demonstration designed to unveil the true King: not Caesar, not Herod, but God, the champion of justice and mercy. In his actions during the last week of his earthly life, Jesus acts and speaks out of a sense of calling – he can do no other – without obsessing over the consequences. In his writings, Paul calls us to be imitators of the one who enters Jerusalem – not to die on a cross, but to have the courage to pursue justice and mercy in the face of pain and evil, regardless of the consequences. Are you up to it? I hope and pray that you are!

New Members

We will receive new members into our fellowship this weekend during worship on Saturday evening and at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A reception will follow both services for you to greet our newest members.

Palms

Palm fronds will be handed out at all three services, and a special processional will begin the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. Children are asked to gather in the narthex immediately after Sunday School, at 10:15 a.m.

Ash Wednesday Schedule

Dear People of God,

We begin the season of Lent tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Our schedule for the day is as follows:

Bible Study – noon to 1:00 p.m. in the parish house meeting room (blue room).

Bring your own lunch and join in the study of "The Psalms of Lent". Tomorrow, we will look at this Sunday's psalm, which is #32, King David's song of repentance after the Bathsheba debacle; it is a companion song to #51. Coffee will be provided.

            Evening Soup and Worship – we kick-off our joint mid-week Lenten services with St. Paul Lutheran Church (Wayne Ave.), with the first service at LCOS tomorrow.

                                    Soup dinner is at 5:45 p.m. in the parish house meeting room.

                                    Worship in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m., with imposition of ashes and the celebration of Holy Communion

Transfiguration, Schedule for Lent, and Other Matters

Dear People of God,

We close out the Epiphany season this weekend with the celebration of the Transfiguration of our Lord. The title is a reference to Jesus' experience on the mountaintop with his friends/disciples Peter, James and John, wherein Jesus' appearance is momentarily changed (transfigured) to dazzling white and he is joined by Moses and Elijah. More importantly, Jesus' ministry is validated by God as the disciples hear the divine voice instruct them to listen to Jesus. How easy it could have been for Peter, James and John to completely miss that God-moment, had they been joking around on the mountain, enjoying the view, taking a nap, or making a sled run. How easy it is for us to miss out on the God-moments in our lives as well, for the Lord comes to us each day in and through so many people and events. Have there been times in your life when you have been aware that God has been with you? Are you aware that God is with you as you read this? Or when you are at school, driving to work, at the grocery store, in a meeting, on the playground, in a restaurant, as you work in your yard? How might your life be different if you were more aware of God's presence? I invite you to pay attention to these questions as we enter the season of Lent next week.

OPEN HOUSE @ NOAH'S ARK PRESCHOOL

LENTEN MID-WEEK ACTIVITIES

The season of Lent begins with our observance of Ash Wednesday on March 9. This year, on Wednesdays, we will offer both a noon Bible Study and an evening worship service. Below are the details:

The noon Bible Study will look at the "Psalms of Lent" will meet in the parish house Meeting Room, and will include a brown bag lunch (bring your own). We will conclude around 1:00 p.m.

The evening worship will again be a joint ministry with St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wayne Ave. A simple soup dinner will be held at 5:45 p.m., and worship will begin at 6:30 p.m. Our worship theme this year will be "Reclaiming the Values of Jesus". Special thanks to everyone who has volunteered to make soup for the three Wednesdays we are hosting dinner/worship. We are still seeking people to make one pot of soup for March 23, and one pot for April 6 (any kind). If you would like to make a pot of soup, please respond to this email, and indicate which date you are cooking for. The Ash Wednesday dinner and worship will be held at Our Savior.

Wintry Church News

Dear People of God,

   As I write this, I am able to see the grass in my backyard for perhaps only the second or third time in over a month, and by tomorrow, my backyard is supposed to be covered with snow again. I am well aware that not everyone is giddy with delight at the prospect of more snow. In fact, after the first flakes made an appearance in early December, some of you were telling me that you couldn't wait for the arrival of Spring! A dear friend and ministry mentor from Wilmington, North Carolina, helped me to understand the importance of "being in the moment", and celebrating life as it came each day. While on my internship "at the beach", I shared with John that I could not wait to receive my first call to parish ministry (1.5 years from then), and he gently accused me of trying to wish my life away. Over the years I have come to appreciate that gift of being in the moment, because despite all my planning and hoping, the present is all I have each day. The Gospel lesson for this weekend is about following Jesus, answering our baptismal calling to become disciples of our Lord. Discipleship, living out our faith, happens in the moment, because God is in the moment. Planning for tomorrow is certainly important, but if we wish away today, we not only miss opportunities for ministry, we also miss God in our lives. I would never wish that for you.

   So, for those of you who are not giddy with delight about more snow, here's my invitation: Spring will get here soon enough, so have fun with the life God gives you NOW – this Saturday and Sunday, bring a snow ball into worship and aim for me!

STEWARDSHIP LUNCHEON

The Confirmation youth, with help from youth, parents and council members, are preparing our meal this Sunday for the Stewardship Luncheon, which will be held in the fellowship hall, 11:45 a.m. Please RSVP by this Friday if you plan to attend. The event will include a discussion about our congregational stewardship, ministry plans and dreams for 2011, and an opportunity for you to prayerfully discern how you wish to participate in our 2011 ministries. Your participation will assist the council in finalizing the 2011 budget proposal.

HOLY TERRORS PLANNING MEETING

            - It's Lutheran Outdoor Ministry "Camp Sunday", in which we begin collecting money for scholarships to assist children and youth in our congregation to attend summer church camp

            - and it's Annual Meeting Sunday, 11:45 a.m., in the fellowship hall, with covered dish lunch; we will act on the proposed budget for 2011 and hear ministry news from various ministry teams/committees

News for a New Year

Dear People of God,

There is an old, old joke about finding evidence of the existence of baseball in the Bible, in Genesis 1:1 – "In the big inning . . ." It is interesting that those words – the real ones – "In the beginning" show up a couple times in Scripture, and one place is in our Gospel lesson for this weekend. It is truly fitting, I believe, that as we read the prologue to the Gospel According to John ("In the beginning was the Word"), we will be walking through the doorway that leads us into a new year, experiencing another "beginning". But, with all of the hype placed on the start of a new year, we tend to forget that every day God blesses us with another beginning. And the questions that swirl around the start of a new year are the same questions that we should be answering as we start each day, each new beginning: How does God want me to live my life today? How can I use the gifts God has given me to make a positive difference in someone else's life? What opportunities for ministry will God place in my path this day? What can I shed from my life this day that gets in the way of my relationship with God, with my relationships? As those opening words of the Gospel According the John are read this weekend in worship, I invite you to praise God for the beginnings the Lord gives us each day, and to prayerfully consider how you will use those beginnings.

Dear People of God,

"Trust me". How many times have we been sucked in with that simple, two-word phrase? It's not that we don't want to see the best in people, but after having our trust in others dropped and shattered, it's hard not to become jaded when responding to that seemingly innocent request. But, those two simple words are what God whispers to us each morning we rise to begin a new day. God knows there are plenty of things and people promising us everything under the sun everyday; God knows that "all that glitters isn't gold" as Neil Young sang in "Don't Be Denied"; and God also knows that we humans love to go chasing after quick fixes and overnight solutions. God also knows what is behind most of those fixes and solutions – T R O U B L E. Our Old Testament and Gospel lessons for this fourth and last weekend in Advent lift up two contrasting examples of trust – one man ignores God's invitation to trust in the Lord and chooses that quick fix, and the other swallows his pride and chooses to trust in God. The results are astounding, even history-altering. Choosing in whom we trust may not change the course of human history, but it certainly impacts our own history, our own lives. I know how hard it can be to wait for God to act when all of those worldly glittering promises are dancing around in my head. But I also know, often in hindsight, that God's "trust me" never disappoints, never leaves us wishing we had not risked following God!

HEALING PRAYERS

Dear People of God,

This weekend, I will be leading a Men's Retreat for Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio (LOMO) at Lutheran Memorial Camp, and the Rev. Terry Morgan will be leading worship at LCOS. Pastor Morgan served Good Shepherd, Kettering, before serving the Duke University Lutheran congregation in Durham, NC. His final stop was to serve on the synod staff of the Southern Ohio Synod before his recent retirement. You will enjoy Pastor Morgan as your worship leader! The boilers are on at the church – the weatherman says we'll need it Sunday. It's supposed to be 36 Sunday morning at camp! Ahhhh, sweet autumn . . .

Weekend Worship

In our Gospel lesson, Jesus instructs us about the power of faith, and calls us to adopt the attitude of servants responding to our baptismal identity. Part of that servanthood is praying for others. This weekend, we pray for all who wrestle with mental illness, as well as for the family members and friends who care for those dealing with mental illness.

Blessing of the Animals

Monday, October 4, 7:00 p.m.! Bring your pets to church for our annual blessing service. If we have enough light, we'll gather in the prayer labyrinth; otherwise, we will be in the sanctuary. You are invited to bring any and all pets. Please have dogs on leashes, and everything else on leashes, in cages, fishbowls, etc.

Joint Bible Study Starts This Month

This is year three in which St. Paul Lutheran Church and LCOS have met together for monthly Bible Study. Tuesday, October 19 begins a new study: How Lutherans Interpret the Bible. This month, LCOS will host the event, which begins with a light dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed by an hour discussion from 6:45 – 7:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome!

Dear People of God,

Last weekend was a fun way to kick off our Fall Ministries, leaving behind our summer worship schedule and returning to 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. format; launching the Kids' Church ministry during the 10:30 a.m. service; gathering for our SCS Rally Day festivities; and enjoying the glorious weather and great fellowship at the kick off picnic at Schafor Park! This week, our Children's Choirs and SCS classes officially begin.

WORSHIP

One of the strangest, most outlandish stories told by Jesus is our Gospel lesson this weekend. Coupled with the Old Testament reading from the prophet Amos, our lessons can really grate on us all, dreamers or practical-minded. It can, and often does, make us both grateful and furious at the same time.

CHOIRS BEGIN

The Sunshine and Joyful Noise Children's Choirs will begin rehearsals this Sunday, at 9:00 a.m., upstairs in the parish house. The Hand Bell Choir will also resume rehearsals this Sunday, in the balcony, after the late worship service.

LOMO MEN'S RETREAT

There are still spots left for the Men's Fishing Retreat, held October 1-3, at Lutheran Memorial Camp. This retreat is sponsored by Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio, and I was asked to lead it. The retreat topic is What are we fishing around for in life?, and the weekend will also include a pan fish derby on Saturday, ending with a fish fry at the lake. You do not have to like fishing to attend, and there will be other food choices if you do not eat fish. FOOD DRIVE

The New Hope Food Pantry has requested donations of dry pinto beans and rice. We will hold a drive for these items on October 9th and 10th. Two smaller packages is better than one large package, as they help more families; and if a large family has a need they can take two bags. We hope you can help; the need for assistance grows every day with more people than ever seeking help.

PRAYERS

Received a text late last night that Athens County (southeast Ohio) has been declared a disaster area due to severe tornado damage. Please keep the people of southeastern Ohio in your prayers.

This Sunday, September 12, we move to our Fall/Winter/Spring worship schedule, which means there is no more 9:45 a.m. service. Please note the changes:

    8:15 a.m. – contemplative worship

          10:30 a.m. – liturgical worship, with chancel choir

We will also hold Rally Day festivities to kick off our Fall Educational Ministries, and these will begin at 9:30 a.m. for all ages.

Saturday evening worship remains at 5:30 p.m. in the Prayer Labyrinth.

And, remember – our FALL KICKOFF PICNIC will be held this Sunday, 11:45 a.m. at the Schafor Park pavilion (Patterson Rd. and Schafor Blvd.) down the hill from the church. Fried chicken and drinks will be provided – you are asked to bring:

Chancel Choir Kick-Off Party

The Chancel Choir will resume rehearsals on Thursday, September 2 with a party/rehearsal at the home of our director. We will start gathering around 6:30 for fellowship followed by a meal and an informal rehearsal. Meat and drinks will be provided, but bring a dish to share if you are able. Weekend Worship

Our lessons this week continue to lift up the concept of relationship. We hear Jesus lift up the importance of prayer as a way of being in relationship with God, which is the way you and I are created – as relational beings.

On Sunday, July 25, our pastor emeritus, the Rev. Robert Willauer, will be preaching and leading worship. Pastor Willauer served Lutheran Church of Our Savior from 1966 – 1998.

Noah's Ark Lutheran Preschool

Last Sunday, our gathering at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was quite a day! It was fun to be in worship together, communing with one another, and praising God with our many voices. The post-worship lunch, with homemade ice cream and homemade pies, was truly a blessing. But the fun really escalated when we auctioned 5 of the pies! A total of $1173.00 was raised from donations and the auction. The preschool, which will open next month at St. Paul's (in the space of the old Lutheran School) is under the direction of our own Linda Petersen, and features the following:

-          all day pre-kindergarten program

-          daily Bible instruction and weekly chapel with songs and worship

-          use of the nationally acclaimed Core Knowledge curriculum (www.coreknowledge.org)

-          phonics based pre-reading program "Land of the Letter People"

-          math manipulatives, and introduction to: music instruction, foreign language and computer technology

-          cultural and fine arts enrichment programs

-          off-site field trips

-          on site before and after school child care

If you have a child/grandchild who would benefit from participation in the preschool, or have neighbors/friends with preschool-age children, call the office.

Theology on Tap

Next Monday, we will gather at Chappy's Tap Room and Grille (Alex Bell Road) at 6:30 p.m. for our monthly public theological discussion. This month, our discussion topic will utilize pictures from the Hubble telescope to talk about our perceptions of God's power and bigness, and how our perceptions of God impact the ways we live our lives. Everyone is welcome to join in this ever-growing discussion group.

Hard to believe that UD students will be back on campus in a few weeks, and public school starts in a month! Enjoy the rest of the summer and remember to spend time with God each day in prayer and reading of the Word.

As we gather in worship this weekend, we continue in the Gospel According to John, in which the disciples are still having difficulty fully comprehending the power of the resurrection in their lives. It's a "fishing story" that begs the question: what are we fishing around for in life? Does it really give meaning to our daily lives, or does it just leave us empty and wanting something more?

This Wednesday, February 17, we move into a new season of the church year, the season of Lent. It is a time set aside by the church to help us "get back to the basics of our faith." Originally, Lent was that time when new believers were instructed in the faith in preparation for baptism on Easter eve. This is a wonderful time for each of us to "re-instruct" ourselves in matters of the faith. And our mid-week worship schedule is designed to help us do just that. Our Wednesday worship themes are based upon Martin Luther's Small Catechism, a teaching tool that we still use today.

Dear People of God,

Just a quick reminder of this Sunday's Congregational Culture workshop, led by Gary Pecuch, synod staff person for Children, Youth, and Family Ministries. Lunch will be served at 11:45 p.m. (hotdogs, brats, slaw, chips, fruit, cookies); the workshop will begin at 12:15 a.m. and run until 3:00 p.m. Nursery Care will be provided and activities for young children will also be available. I hope you can be with us, for however long you can stay – we need your input.

In worship this weekend, our Gospel lesson is a follow-up to last week, when Jesus presented a new interpretation of Scripture. This week is the reaction of his listeners to his new interpretation, which is to try to throw Jesus down a hill. Our lesson points to the necessity of wrestling with Scripture to discern what God may be trying to tell us today.

No football (that matters) this weekend, NASCAR doesn't officially start until Valentine's Day – as usual, it's a great time to gather to praise God in worship!

Dear People of God in this part of the Kingdom,

Did you know that during WWII, Winston Churchill had an advisor who organized a group of people who, at a prescribed hour, dropped what they were doing and spent one minute praying for the safety of England, its people, and for peace throughout the world?

I encourage and challenge all of us to join many in our nation who are doing the same thing. Every evening at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time (8 p.m. Central Time, 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time, 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time), stop what you are doing and spend one minute in prayer with God. Pray for peace in our homes, schools, cities, and for everyone throughout the world. Pray for the safety of our troops. Pray for our national leaders and for the leaders of the world.

If you are in the habit of retiring for the evening before 9:00 p.m., then carve out another minute in your day to participate in this prayer.

As we step through the doorway into a new year, we praise God for gifting us with so many blessings and guiding us through our many challenges! How appropriate that our worship theme this weekend, the first of the new year, is the prologue to the Gospel According to John: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . . It is also the second and final Sunday in the 12 day season of Christmas, so decorations and carols are still the order of the day. If you wish to read ahead, the lessons for worship are:

EPIPHANY WORSHIP

Wednesday, January 6, is the Festival of the Epiphany, the day commemorating the visit of the Magi to the boy Jesus. We will hold a simple prayer service at 6:45 p.m. in the sanctuary, and then finish taking down the decorations. You are invited to bring your left-over Christmas cookies to share.

Epiphany Stars

&    Everyone is encouraged to read the complete book of Luke between January 6 and February 16, the season of Epiphany in the church year. For each of the 24 chapters you read, you can add a gold star to the hanging displays in the sanctuary and chapel. Let's all read so our worship spaces are filled with glittering gold stars.

&    Each week there will be questions about the book of Luke in the bulletin. Answers to the questions will be given in worship during the week after they appear in the bulletin.

&    At the end of Epiphany, youth and adults will face off in a congregational Bible Bowl here at Our Savior. Watch the newsletter for details of when and where; and start reading Luke now.

EPIPHANY PARTY

You are invited to participate in an Epiphany Party at St. Paul Lutheran Church (Wayne Ave.) on Sunday, January 10, 11:45 a.m. Food (pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, rolls, dessert), carol singing, and a gift exchange will be enjoyed. HUMAN SEXUALITY DISCUSSION

On Tuesday, January 12, 7:00 p.m., we will hold an informal discussion about the ELCA adoption of the human sexuality resolutions at last August's national assembly. This discussion will be held in the first floor meeting room in the parish house. All points of view are welcome.

EUCHRE, ANYONE?

LUTHERAN COURSE

This month, we reconvene our joint educational opportunity with St. Paul Lutheran Church. "The Lutheran Course" will be offered on Tuesday, January 19, at LCOS – a light dinner is served at 6:00 p.m., with discussion to follow at 6:45 p.m. This month's discussion topic is How to receive God's grace/How are we saved?

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

We will hold an all-congregation birthday celebration on Sunday, January 24, 11:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall. This festive fellowship event is designed to help us celebrate everyone's birthday for the whole year. Lunch is being prepared by Lacie Sims and Marty Beyer. A cake decorating contest will be just one of the special activities offered. Plan now to attend by responding to this email to make your reservations. A free-will offering will be collected to help with the cost of lunch.

It was suggested to me that we have a Church Motto for our congregation for 2010, and that it be the line that Jesus gave his mother when, at the age of 12, he was in the temple while his parents were looking for him: "Didn't you know that I had to be here?" I like that, and I hope and pray that in this new year, all of us will deepen our relationship with God in worship, prayer, study and ministry! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

People of God,

Happy New Year!! This weekend we begin a new church year as we usher in the Season of Advent. We praise God for faithfully walking with us throughout last year, and we pray that the Lord of new life will guide us in our ministry during this new year. In all three worship services, different families will light the first candle on the Advent Wreath; we will also be joined by members of the East Coast Captive Free Band who will be present to bring us special music in all three services. Captive Free is the "musical ministry arm" of Youth Encounter. Our own John Buechele played with the West Coast band last year. Start off the new year by praising God in worship, whether you are away visiting family or in town!

Thanksgiving Soup

Special thanks to everyone who made soup for our Wednesday night Thanksgiving Eve dinner and worship. We were treated to NINE different soups, all delicious. Some diners tried valiantly to taste all 9 soups! What a great holiday treat. Thank you!

Chrismon Trees

Next Saturday, December 5, after evening worship (around 6:15 p.m.), we will begin the process of putting up the Chrismon Trees. We will order pizza for all who can stay. On Sunday, December 6, after the second worship service (around 11:45 a.m.), we will finish erecting the trees and hanging the lights. Lunch will also be provided for all who can stay.

The first snow flakes of the season fell at noon today as I was cleaning out my gutters – it's almost time to make snow angels!

A Message From Our Pastor - Fall Schedule Begins

This weekend, we move into our Fall Worship Schedule:

During all three worship services, we will dedicate new pew Bibles, commission teachers, assistants, musicians and choirs. Our Rally Day festivities will include refreshments, games, music, a skit, and an opportunity for students to meet their teachers.

It's time to update our mailing lists, so if you have youth in college this year, please send their address(es) to the church office by September 25.

Camping Trip

There's still time to reserve your spot for the 2^nd Annual Church Campout, sponsored by the Holy Terrors, Friday-Sunday, September 18-20. Cost is $6 per person per night (tent). Mission Trip Meeting

Blessing of the Animals

On Saturday, October 3, during the 5:30 p.m. outdoor worship, we will hold a special "Blessing of the Animals". You are invited to bring your pet(s) to worship.

This weekend in worship, our lessons lift up the doctrine of the Holy Trinity (God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). It's one thing to read God's Word. . . it's another to have a sense of grounding and understanding for what you are reading. Try The Lutheran Study Bible. We just gave copies to our confirmands, and it is a tremendously helpful resource to complement your daily Scripture reading. A copy is on display in the narthex, along with an order form, if you wish to order a copy for yourself. Cost is $18.75 per copy, which is a savings of $6.24. The order will be placed on Monday, June 29.

Prayers

For NCR employees – that their fears be eased as they await word on their future . . . for the many former GM (and affiliated) workers and the many former DHL/ABX employees who are still seeking employment – that doors would soon open for them . . . for parents, that they would remain strong as they strive to rear their children in the faith during such confusing times . . . for Dayton and Montgomery County leaders – that they be given vision and skills to effectively lead in these challenging times. . . for our congregation – that we would always keep God's mission foremost in our minds . . . and praise to God – because despite the junk life throws at us, God is always good all the time!

It might have been 7 degrees above zero yesterday morning, but you can hear it in the air – SPRING is coming on fast!! Can I get an AMEN?

It is in this season of transition between winter and spring that we observe the season of LENT, and this weekend, our lessons continue with the theme of covenant and promise, as our Old Testament lesson recounts the second covenant God made with humanity – Abraham and Sarah called to become the parents of the chosen people of God. And in our Gospel lesson, Jesus clearly spells out what is expected of those who are called to be God's people.

Don't be late! MOVE YOUR CLOCKS ONE HOUR AHEAD THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!!!! Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday.

Council Strategic Planning Session

Adopt-A-College Student Program

Jr. High/Sr. High Discussion

Youth in the Jr. High and Sr. High are invited to gather at Graeters Ice-Cream Shoppe in Oakwood on Sunday, March 15, 7:00 p.m. for the purpose of brainstorming ideas for Sunday School. Lutheran Course

This month, the Lutheran Course will again be held at Lutheran Church of Our Savior on Tuesday, March 17. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Yesterday we entered a new season of the church year, Lent, the name of which is derived from the Latin meaning "lengthening of days". Throughout this 40 day season (Sunday's are not part of Lent), our gospel texts help us to focus on our baptismal identity as children of God. This weekend, we have the brief account in Mark of Jesus' baptism, temptation in the wilderness, and his proclamation that the Kingdom of God has come near – a fitting way to begin our reflection on our relationship with the God who claimed us in Baptism. Instead of following the tradition of "giving up" something for Lent, I encourage you to take advantage of the new beginnings God gives us each day: find ways as a family or individually to help someone else by using your gifts in ministry; make a difference in the life of another.

This Sunday is Bring A Friend To Sunday School Sunday. Our Christian Education team is encouraging everyone to invite a friend, classmate, coworker, neighbor, family member, to attend Sunday School. And while you are at it – invite them to worship as well!

Next Sunday, March 8, we will conclude our Summer Camp Scholarship Drive. Special thanks to everyone who has already made a donation to help send some of our children and youth to church camp this summer. If you would like to make a donation, please use on of the envelopes in the narthex and cloister tables labeled, Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio "Camperships", and place your donation in the offering plate or mail it to the church office.

Your response to the Souper Bowl Food Drive was exceptional! Thank you for all your donations. Unfortunately, the need continues to grow, so keep bringing your canned food donations to the church. On March 14/15, in worship, a representative of the New Hope Food Pantry will be with us to share more details about their work. On that weekend, the Social Ministry Committee is hosting a Fill the Grocery Bag Drive. Kroger Grocery is supplying bags, and the Social Ministry Team is creating a "shopping list". Be sure to pick up your grocery bag at the church March 14/15 to fill up. More details will follow.

We move into the season of Lent this Wednesday, February 25, with our observance of Ash Wednesday. Two worship opportunities are provided for you:

Noon – in the LCOS chapel (with imposition of ashes and celebration of Holy Communion), followed by a simple meal in the parish house meeting room

7:00 p.m. – at St. Paul's Lutheran Church (Wayne Ave.), also with the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion. Pastor Miller and I will present a dialogue sermon on the Old Testament lesson (Joel 2:1-2, 12-17). Please eat before coming to the evening service – there is no meal!

May the Holy Spirit lead you into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ during this season of Lent.

News From Our Pastor; Ash Wednesday

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The Season of Epiphany concludes this weekend with our observance of the Transfiguration, that mountaintop event in which Jesus takes 3 disciples who witness their "changed" Lord talking with the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah. As we have seen through our lessons in Mark during the season of Epiphany, the disciples just don't "get it", as here, Jesus prepares to travel to Jerusalem to meet his death, and they try to stop him. Are we willing to walk with our Lord to the cross in our discipleship?

Chancel Trees Coming Down

This Sunday, following the 10:30 a.m. service, we will remove the lights and dismantle the trees, which will be stored in the parish house basement. Lunch will be provided. Plan to remain/come back after worship to help prepare our sanctuary for the season of Lent. With enough help, this should be an easy, quick job.

New Members

We are receiving new member-disciples into our fellowship this Sunday, during the 10:30 a.m. service.

JLI Annual Meeting

Jeremiah's Letter, Inc., the urban ministry arm of the Dayton Conference, will hold its annual meeting on Monday, February 23, 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, on Wayne Ave. Our own Terry Bruns is the executive director of this organization which is one of our mission partners. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend and learn more about this important ministry in the Dayton community.

Ash Wednesday

The season of Lent begins with our observance of Ash Wednesday on February 25. We will offer two worship opportunities: one at Noon, in the chapel, followed by a simple lunch in the parish house meeting room. The evening service will be held at St. Paul (Wayne Ave.), 7:00 p.m. (NO MEAL). The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services, as will the imposition of ashes.

May God's healing peace surround you this week and lift your spirits in worship!

News From Our Pastor

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Aaahh . . . the hint of spring . . . good medicine for the soul! As we gather in worship this weekend, we hear about another kind of good medicine – our Old Testament and Gospel lessons are accounts of God healing lepers, who were excluded (literally "kicked out) from society because of their disease. Our lessons raise questions about our own lives: when and how have we been the "leper" and felt excluded? And, who are the "lepers" today – in our lives and in society? And in both cases, how does God in Christ bring about the healing of inclusion and acceptance?

On Saturday, February 14, the Health Ministry Team is hosting "FUN FOR YOUR HEART, MIND, AND SOUL" in the fellowship hall, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. for people of all ages. This "game day" features a wide variety of activities:

            HEART             corn hole, ping pong, shuffle board, charades, Wii, foosball, and more

            MIND                pictionary, scrabble, sudoke, hidden pictures, and more

            SOUL               fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ!

If you have them, bring your Wii Mii remotes.

Troop Supplies

We have already collected enough supplies to send our first box to Ramadi, Iraq. Thanks for your continued support.

Adopt-A-College Student

There are still envelopes on the tree in the narthex. Take one this weekend and support our students while they are in school.

Outdoor Ministry Camperships

Again, this weekend, special envelopes are in the bulletins for our campership (summer camp scholarship) fund drive. We are collecting donations to create scholarships to encourage kids from our congregation to attend summer camp this summer in one of our ELCA camps in Ohio: Lutheran Memorial Camp, Camp Mowana, or Camp Luther. Checks should be made out to Lutheran Church of Our Savior. The fund drive will conclude on March 8, and families have until March 22 to apply for scholarship funds.

Lutheran Course

The next installment of our monthly study with St. Paul's Lutheran Church is next Tuesday, February 17, 6:00 p.m., and will be held at Lutheran Church of Our Savior. A simple meal will be held in the fellowship hall at 6:00 p.m., and the class discussion will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the parish house first floor meeting room. This month's study topic is "The Sacrament of Holy Communion".

New Members

We will receive new members into our fellowship on Sunday, February 22, at the 10:30 a.m. service. If you know of someone who is interested in becoming a part of our fellowship, please let me know.

I encourage you to join your sisters and brothers in worship this weekend, and look to invite a friend to come with you!

Souper Bowl

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

At our annual meeting this morning, I had the joy of announcing that our congregation collected 389 cans of soup, plus another 47 boxes of crackers/ramen noodles/etc. for the Souper Bowl Food Collection this weekend. Way to go! Perhaps an even more exciting number to share is that the children in our Sonshine Children's Choir came to rehearsal this morning and brought with them 55 food items for the collection!

This means that an additional 100 cans of soup will be donated to the cause since we met the challenge. Thank you for responding!

A Message From Our Pastor

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We are coming down to the wire . . . there are three more Sundays left in this Church Year before we step through the threshold of a new year, in which we tell the faith stories of Scripture all over again, from a different perspective. And the mood of our lessons changes with the year's approaching end. For the past few months, our lessons have focused on the importance of following Jesus' lessons as we grow in our discipleship. Now, the lessons point to the end times, looking toward that time when Jesus will usher in the Kingdom of God in its fullness. And this week, our worship theme deals with being prepared, keeping our relationship with God fresh, alive, and "filled".

Tomorrow night (Wednesday, 11/5), we gather again in the chapel for our contemplative worship time Escape the Noise. This 30 minute time in the chapel is set aside for silent prayer and the renewal of our relationship with God. It begins at 6:45 p.m., and includes the reading of Scripture at the beginning, and a spoken prayer at the conclusion. You are welcome to come and go as your schedule permits.

Saturday, November 8, the annual German Fest Dinner will be held at Faith Lutheran Church as a fundraiser for one of our mission partners, Jeremiah's Letter. The meal will be served from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available from Ron Iverson and Jack Whitaker, and we also have a few available in the church office. Cost is $8 for adults ($9 at the door), and $4 for children.

Sunday, 11:45 a.m., the Youth will gather at the church for a lunch meeting, and parents are invited. This is a rebuilding and restructuring year for our Youth Ministry Program, and our Youth Ministries Director, Celeste Hoerner, is seeking input from youth and parents for this new year. We are ordering lunch from Milanos. Parents: help us out by making sure your youth can be with us after worship!

It's a nice day for an election. May God bless the poll workers with strength and wisdom! But as our nation moves through the next days, weeks, and months, regardless of who is elected, I ask you to pray for the healing of our nation, and for forgiveness for all those of any party affiliation who used half-truths and lies to spread fear in the American public just to get someone elected. May God silence the merchants of fear today! And may our nation learn to trust and follow God, who is the source of life, and hope, and peace - the one who continually tells us, "FEAR NOT!"

May the God of peace breathe hope and new life in you this week, and may we be led to gather together in worship this weekend to lift our voices in praise to the God who is in charge, and who makes all things new!
